I See and I Got You!

John 19:26-27

26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!"

27 Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.

1. How He tenderly provides

I can only imagine Jesus in agony on the cross, looking out in the crowd and seeing His mother stricken with grief and He Himself in so much pain. How do you focus on the needs of others, while you’re in the midst of your own hell?

You don’t know what you can bear until we are truly tried. Until you have to deal with your own stuff. He shifts His focus off Himself…

He looks at His mother and knew that He could no longer be there to support her, to take care of her but he wanted her to rest assured that she would be taken care of by someone who He trusted to truly take care of her. Even in His death, while bearing man’s sin and God’s wrath, He was the Jehovah Jireh, still he was tenderly providing.​​

As He continues to look out, He sees the disciple he loves standing not far away from His mother. He steps in, as a son should, and He replaces Himself. He shifts His focus, again off himself…He creates a new relationship between His beloved mother and His beloved disciple and says, “Woman, behold your son, John, behold your mother” and from that hour, the disciple took her into his own household.

2. He shows how much He cares

Sometimes, sometimes God shows His care for us by removing one comfort from us, and raising up another for us, in places where we would never think it would come from. Obviously, John’s life, his character was a testimony. Jesus knew that or else He would have not made John His mother’s guardian. It is truly an honor to be employed for Christ, and to be entrusted with what He has given us.

But oh what a responsibility. Those that truly love Christ, and are beloved of Him, would be more than happy of an opportunity to do any service to Him or His.

At the end of the day, this last word reflects the beauty of the Savior’s love and compassion for His own in the midst of His own excruciating pain.

He looks out at us, His people and He says, “I see your grief. I see your pain. I see your struggles, and I see your concerns. I am not going to leave you comfortless, but I am going to leave you a comforter. But Rest assured, I got you. I am going to make sure that your grief is taken care of, that your pain in taken care of and that your struggles are taken care of. And when you call on me, I will answer. I will never leave your nor forsake. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.”
